Is Halloween always celebrated on the same day?
Halloween celebrations are always October 31st, but which day of the week it's celebrated varies from year to year. For example, in 2021, Halloween will be celebrated on a Sunday, and in 2023, Halloween will be celebrated on a Tuesday.
How has Halloween been celebrated throughout history?
Many researchers believe that Halloween celebrations arose some 2000 years ago, during a festival called Samhain, when the Celts living in Europe. October 31 marked the end of summer and harvest and the beginning of winter in Celtic culture. They believed that on this date, which also marked the beginning of the new year for the Celts, the border between the living and the dead was broken. Thus, on the evening of October 31, it was believed that the souls of the dead returned to earth. According to The American Folklife Center, people believed they had easy contact with the deads during this time and needed to light large bonfires to ward off evil spirits.
By AD 43, the Roman Empire had taken most Celtic lands. During this period, two Roman festivals were combined with Samhain. The first, Feralia, is traditionally celebrated in late October to commemorate the dead. Second, Pomona was celebrated to honor the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple. This can be described as "shaking apples" today.
In later years, the Irish used wax-lit turnips, completely carved and embroidered with a demon face, to scare away evil spirits. The name "Jack-O'-Lantern" comes from a character from an Irish folktale who invites the Devil to have a drink but does not pay for it. Stingy Jack deceived the devil and made a pact with him not to claim his soul, but in the end it was God expelled Jack from heaven. Now Jack wanders Earth as an evil spirit with his lantern lighting his way.
Before Halloween, the Irish would scrape scary faces on turnips or potatoes and place them near doors or windows to scare away the Miserable Jack and the evil spirits. When Irish immigrants in the 1840s found very few turnips in the United States, they used the more abundant pumpkins instead.
