Anyone expecting multiple costume changes from previous Super Bowls may be disappointed. Nonetheless, Rihanna dazzled at the halftime show in an all-red suit custom-made for her by luxury brands Loewe and Alaia.
Following reports that the star is expecting her second child, it may explain why she chose a pair of comfortable sneakers in a complementary shade of red.
The Barbadian singer began his 13-minute halftime show by singing "B**** Better Have My Money" from a suspended platform while dressed in a cotton canvas flying suit. The suit nearly completely unfolded to reveal a matching silk jersey catsuit and sculpted leather bodice.
Jonathan Anderson, the creative director of the Spanish label Loewe, created all three garments. Her look was inspired by flight gear and was "designed to build volume in step with the dynamic scenography of the show," according to the fashion brand, which debuted a similar-looking red breastplate as part of its Spring 2022 ready-to-wear collection.
Rihanna completed her look with a pair of red sneakers from Maison Margiela's collaboration with Salomon. She wore a leather puffer scarf with integrated gloves by Alaia, the late Tunisian couturier Azzedine Alaia's label.
The 34-year-old quickly removed the scarf before performing a medley of hits such as "Rude Boy" and "Umbrella." But she returned for the finale, "Diamonds," in another Alaia piece. Pieter Mulier, the label's creative director, designed this time a red leather maxi puffer coat with integrated gloves. (At the halftime show press conference on Thursday, Rihanna wore an aviator jacket by Alaia, which recently opened a New York boutique after more than 30 years without a physical presence in the city.)
That was Rihanna's first live performance in six years. The star, who has spent the majority of her time building her lingerie and beauty empire, had predicted that she would wear pieces from the Savage X Fenty line. That is left to the legion of backup dancers, whose white hooded jackets have opened to reveal the lingerie brand's assortment of products.
The fashion queen's label seized the opportunity and immediately reminded fans on social media that the dancers' sports bras, boxers, and mesh tank tops are all available for purchase.
